Lanzarote stands out for the great variety of landscapes that are nourished by the volcanic origin of the island. Social customs, a particular economy and a recognizable culture have developed linked to these landscapes throughout the island. “A stroll around Lanzarote” tries to combine this compendium of natural and cultural experiences to project them onto public space, thus reducing the large scale of Lanzarote to a walkable and informal space.
Context
The Plaza del Almacén has a favorable strategic location between the historic center of Lanzarote and a concentration of cultural resources. Taking advantage of this, the idea is to create a walk that connects with other spaces of cultural interest and promotes pedestrian mobility in the most traditional environment of the city.
Of all human intervention on the island, the Geria is the one that has left the greatest mark on the volcanic terrain. This way of cultivating the land has a very consistent geometry, with slight variations that make it a cultural element of great interest. The strength of the geometry of La Geria is used in the intervention to generate three-dimensional discs where to expose the most outstanding extracts from the landscape and culture of Lanzarote. type specimen book.
Intervention
The variety of cultural activities that frequent the island leads us to conceive an active public space full of possibilities of use. To accommodate these transformations, two versatile spaces and a large stage are planned that are capable of hosting markets, fairs and any other type of event. These border the promenade and form a diagonal that marks the main direction of traffic. The rest of the spaces are divided between recreational (2 discs) and different types of green spaces (4 discs) that relate to the autochthon species of the island.
On these elements a structure rises that reinforces the main diagonal of the promenade through three types of shade: directional, living and energy.
